Modernism is not always Modernist

The battles created by intellectuals and academics make lively reading as a preparation for any trip to art galleries.

There are several versions of an influential article by Clement Greenberg on the Internet that help clear some of the analytical cobwebs away:

"Realistic, naturalistic art had dissembled the medium, using art to conceal art; Modernism used art to call attention to art. "

Perhaps it it the self-regarding emphasis on technique that causes my exhaustion after too much contact with 20th Century art?
Strangely, Greenberg seems to have taken out a personal aesthetic vendetta on
Roy Lichtenstein, one of my favourites.

Brave new world...
