Really You Have to Laugh

Last night we went to see "Hay Fever" at the Gate.

It is playing to packed houses and sent us off home again with a renewed sense of purpose in life. Noel Coward and the Bliss Family... an unholy alliance of daftness and social anxiety that could only happen in England. The fact that Irish actors pretending to be English always adds a confused surrealism to any production cheered me even more. It looked, almost sounded and behaved like people in England might in the 1920s... but it was not.

The show has more in common with the Commedia dell'Arte and the stock characters are so well set in their ways that it would be interesting to go to this production again, just to see if they vary any of the mannerisms.

I could not work out if the music played before the show and during the interval was Arletty or Jospephine Baker.
