Potboilers, Thrillers and Genre

It seems that when he had finished "The Turn of the Screw" Henry James had so got the wind up and so frightened himself, he was afraid to even go out into the garden at dusk.

Dubliners are made of sterner stuff. The city has been the home of many stalwart genre writers, many innovators in the thriller and horror genre.

Maturin, Le Fanu and Bram Stoker are just three of an increasing number of storytellers who have found an evocative setting for their imaginings.

If these walls could only speak...

It's funny, but Turn of the Screw didn't scare me, even as a kid--and I'm fairly easily frightened by horror. I'm a fan of James, but not of that tale.
